Spain Exhumes Late Dictator Franco's Remains

▶️ A helicopter transports a coffin with the remains of Spain's former dictator General Francisco Franco to a reburial site, Thursday, October 24.

👉 Nearly two dozen relatives were on hand as Franco's coffin was removed from his tomb at the Valley of the Fallen mausoleum, built on a mountain overlooking the Spanish capital.

After the coffin was taken out of the mausoleum, it was placed in a hearse and taken to a waiting helicopter for transport to the Mingorrubio El Pardo state cemetery north of Madrid, for interment in a crypt next to Franco's wife.

The exhumation is the final chapter in a long legal battle between the dictator's heirs and the ruling Socialist government of caretaker Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who prioritized removing Franco from the mausoleum since coming to power last year.

Franco's family lost a final appeal against the government before the Supreme Court last month. The government said the move to the new site would cost about $70,000.

Rising popularity of fascism in Spain lead the government to close the monument to Fascism he built to himself and bury him in a church graveyard. Franco’s grave monument was a rallying point for the fascist movement.
