Building trust | James Davis | TEDxUSU

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. I trust my boss! I trust Apple Computer! But what does that mean…why do you trust them? It has been said that trust is the glue that holds people, organizations and societies together. Without trust, relationships become rigid, less efficient and economies are slowed. Yet, despite all the studies and platitudes, trust may be one of the most misunderstood, misinterpreted and misapplied aspects of human and organizational relationships. Based upon years of his award-winning research in psychology and business, Jim Davis explains what trust is along with its associated risks. He will explain what can be done to influence how people trust you by nurturing three traits others perceive about you. Davis describes how he has worked with organizations and individuals throughout the world to improve trusting relationships.

James H. Davis is a professor of strategic management and the chairman of the Management Department at Utah State University. Prior to USU, he was the John F. O’Shaughnessy Professor of Family Enterprises and professor of strategic management at the University of Notre Dame. He earned his PhD in corporate strategy from the University of Iowa. He has worked with many major national and multinational corporations on strategic planning and company positioning. His research was recognized by The Academy of Management Review as the most influential theory of the decade of the 1990s. He is the author of two books: Social Capital: Multidisciplinary Perspectives and Growth Simply: The three-circle model. He has been a secondary education teacher, a school psychologist, private therapist and a regional mental health coordinator for the Head Start Program. Jim also plays woodwinds and has performed in many of the great concert halls and cathedrals in Europe and North America. He loves hiking, fishing and running—recently completing a 200+ mile Ragnar relay— and enjoys spending time his children and the love of his life, Jennifer.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

TRUST
build it, grow it, repair it

TRUST: CHOOSING TO BE VULNERABLE AND TAKE RISK
The propensity to trust (to take risk), it's more than that

3 reasons we "TRUST"
1. Ability (Can they do what they say they can do?). It's in a specific to the thing to what they can do
2 Benevolence (Do they care about me?) If they realy care, it's not from their ego.
3. Perceived Integrity (Will they?). It means, i have a set of values, i live those values, and you trust me. In other words, you are proving your words

When they are vulnerable with you they trust you when they believe that you have the ability to do something they trust you, when they believe that you care about them they trust you,
when they believe that you have integrity you have values and you stick by them they trust you

Enjoyed how Mr. Davis took the 3 areas of Ability, Benevolence and Integrity as factors of trust and how he related them to historical figures along with his own personal experience with para-gliding. Very enjoyable video.

When he talked about integrity he focused on the point of NOT DRIVEN BY EGO and it’s true, what we see in our society nowadays is that the values are talked about but not applied in real life

Trust is the perception or hope or pre-conception that there is no risk in the first place. Who worries about the risk of using a trusted brand? IF you're daring to try an unknown or questionable brand, willing to be vulnerable and take risks, then that is courage not trust.

the more I work in a professional corporate environment - the more I believe that a culture of Trust is more important than anything else! - who you hire... what processes / methodologies you use, etc...

What I've learned about trust is that sometimes you have to build it based on destroying bad assumptions, it's unfortunate, because I prefer to build trust naturally. :)Trust that comes naturally always works the best, but sometimes you deal with the wrong kind of people, and with those you have to tare down ideas that don't exist at all. This world is filled up with dishonesty, trust isn't just a good thing in people, today you have to use it as a weapon. The world is too organized with too many bad people in those organizations.I don't admire people in politics, they have to deal with this dishonesty issue all the time, things are so much easier in the private sphere where I don't have to deal with that issue. That is why I stay away from it for as long as possible, just do my own private things, like play the latest strategy game or the latest card game from microsoft.

Irony is you cannot Trust Apple with your data anymore. NSA, snowdon etc, hacking breaches due to flaws also happen to big companies sometimes. And coke makes us sick long term. I get his points but I have really gone off big brands recently. Look at Twitter files for example.
