Reading the manual found "if your Cubbit Cell remains unplugged for more than 30 days the files you
saved on Cubbit will be lost forever" - it was a dealbreaker for me.

finally...i don't have to move files in flashdrives between my PC and mac. Thanks for sharing, Grant!

Very cool. Personally, I started using a NAS device for most of the same reasons you mentioned. It's definitely a much better and more private solution than relying on Google for everything.

I'm not sure the pros of this solution really came through clearly in this video.

The files are encrypted and split into chunks, those chunks are distributed across the Cubbit network. No one on the network can access your files because all they have is encrypted shards.

Your files are lost if your Cubbit Cell is offline for a while because your Cell stores other users' chunks, too. It's a community of users that rely on each other, but even if multiple Cells holding shards of your files go offline, your files can still be reconstructed (and as soon as a Cell holding a shard of your file goes offline, it gets moved to a different Cell on the network).

The main selling point is the fact that you get cloud-like storage, meaning you can access your files from anywhere and they're not lost if your Cubbit Cell is destroyed in a fire, flood or anything else, but it's a one-time purchase of the physical Cell, not a subscription like every cloud storage provider.

The concerns around the Cubbit account and Coordinator are valid, but I strongly suggest anyone who's interested to read Cubbit's blog posts and updates over the years to get a better understanding of the work they're doing and the tech behind it, I'm fairly certain they've already answered many, if not all, of the concerns brought up in these comments.

So if that "coordinator" get hacked/broken/offline or something then you have lost your files?

So if the coordinator fails/get hacked or is off line you have lost your data? I wrote almost same comment yesterday but it got deleted I wonder why.

How does this differentiate from IPFS?

so if i understood correctly you store parts of your files in other devices... what happens to your file if those devices go offline or breaks?

Hmmm having a proprietary device connected 24/7 on my personal or work network is not attractive, specially in terms of cyber security.
This thing would constantly be downloading and uploading from my network and who knows what can be run on it and how good is their security implementation against malicious code. Sounds like a honeypot to me.

I dislike because even though it’s encrypted I don’t like my data on other parties machines. It’s really not much different between Google and Dropbox because they promise security as well. I buy, I own, I self-host. You should make a video on syncthing. If you are going to have an always-online machine, might as well get a nas or diy one.

Great content Grant! I was wondering about this. Thank you for doing this!

Don't NextCloud or even Syncthing provide the same service but for free and open source?

@7:45 My cell absolutely does not make that ticking noise. I think that might mean you've got a cell with a spinning hard drive, rather than an SSD: that sounds like drive heads that need lubrication (or plausibly replacement of the drive). I'd contact support, if I were you.

Can I use Ledger for saving my files on it? :D

I'd love to see an update now that you have been using the Cubbit for a while.

Can't put my finger on it, but no to cubbit cell. Loss of control of data to gain control of data seems to risky. Sounds like bitcoin in a way, it is super secure, uncrackable, yet bitcoins are stolen repeatedly.
