I can vouch for this. My coworker was struggling with an axle nut one day using his generic low mass socket. I handed him my matco socket same size just bulkier and a little longer and it came right off.

Not quite right on the explanation. Essentially, the bolt exhibits some elasticity under torsion. When you apply a torque, the head of the bolt rotates slightly before the force is fully transferred to the threads. With a lighter socket, the energy from the impact is more quickly transferred to the bolt, causing it to rebound or 'spring back' slightly before the next impact. This can reduce the effectiveness of subsequent impacts. In contrast, a heavier socket has more mass and thus more inertia, which means it doesn’t spring back as quickly. The extra mass helps to absorb and transfer the impacts more effectively, allowing each subsequent hit to add more rotational force to the bolt head. Over time, this cumulative effect helps to transmit the rotational force down to the threads, eventually loosening the bolt. The longer the bolt the more the mass matters.

I actually have that same Mac usa made socket and I love how compact and shallow it is...

Brand doesn't necessarily matter, it's really about the weight of the socket. The Snap-On is thicker and has more weight to it which will give it more inertia than the MAC. Thats why you see some sockets being called inertia sockets.

Professional tip: to avoid buying the the giant wrench, just throw a rod threw the block. You wouldn't need that tool anymore

For impact sockets buy cheap Aslong as there’s a lot of mass a heavy cheap socket will often work better than a light branded it’s all about inertia

Just proved that with the Lisle 77080 19mm for Honda pilot 3.5 crank bolt. Like butter!!

In this context, always use the biggest socket you can fit for the application. This is why I usually grab a deep first, if it’ll fit.

Nice video Mr Subbie, accurate statement at the end !

Close.... But you can see that bolt give a little with the first socket and don't show a retorque, I'm saying this is an attempt at but NOT a fair comparison

Did you re torque before trying the snap on socket?

Been using my $30 socket set 2yrs, never let me down once

The longer a socket the more torque. The same way the longer wrench you have the more leverage you can apply. Till you shear a deep well or your rachet

The scientific method would be to re torque the bolt before the next socket. However, the SO does have more mass, but? Did the MAC loosen the bolt a tiny bit for the SO? Besides, a stronger impact would take the bolt off with either socket.

I used a regular craftsman socket the other day cause it was close. That thing was Hot and didn’t work 😂 had to go for a walk to the garage

Only thing I don't like about the snap-on impacts is that the part that goes on the impact always tear up fast

I had no idea that the socket mattered. Learn something new every day!

Wild. When you add more mass, it impacts harder. Who would’ve ever thought that. Brand is irrelevant if the mass is the same.

Up to a point. There is a drop off where larger sizes produce less uggas.

That’s why I use deep wall when possible
