How to Fix your Failing to Maintain your Spine Angle Problem
The classic golf saying of keeping your head still is associated with this swing error. Now while keeping your head perfectly still is no longer widely recommended, keeping your spine angle is.
If you are taking practice swings in front of a mirror and you see your head moving up and down then you know you might have this swing problem. Contrast this with Tour Pros that keep their spine angle perfectly still, moving around its axis instead.
In order to fix this swing error, imagine that you were stuck on the ground through a spear that went along your body. You can’t rise or lower your upper body while in this position, but you certainly can rotate around it. This is what you should be doing with your backswing and downswing, i.e., rotating around your spine rather than lifting your upper body up or lowering it down.
You can practice this drill with a mirror by putting a line with a marker or tape on the mirror on the location of your spine at address. Then proceed with your swing while taking care not to move away from that line on the mirror.
Naturally, you are allowed to rise from that spine angle position as you progress into the follow through. Specifically, about when your right shoulder reaches below your chin is a good point to allow yourself to rise up for the follow through.
