Holiday History - Labor Day

Показать описание
At the height of what we call the “industrial revolution” in the late eighteen-hundreds, the average person would have to work twelve hours, seven days a week just to get by, and it wasn’t unusual to see kids as young as five working beside adults in mines and factories.
Labor Day is a real holiday in the United States in part because a few visionaries thought it was a good idea to limit the work day to eight hours and give people weekends off. That was a pretty radical concept at the time, and many employers fought hard to keep things the way they were. Of course, there’s a lot more to the Labor Day story than the five-day work week and eight-hour work day we enjoy in the United States. In fact, some countries have labor rules that are even more worker-friendly. As large groups of people began to move from agricultural jobs to manufacturing jobs, working conditions started to become a much bigger deal. Grassroots labor movements got together to address tough human rights problems in the workplace. Large numbers of people were suffering death, injuries, or serious health risks on the job, and had little or no access to clean air, water, or sanitation. This is the origin of many of the improvements we've seen in pay and working conditions over the years.
