Retro-Bit Lied About the Prism Cable | RetroActive

Retro-Bit released the Prism component cables for the Gamecube not that long ago and I gave them a glowing review. Well, not long after that some interesting information came to light that I need to address–Reto-Bit basically lied about these cables and has yet to make a statement on it. Should you still buy these cables for your Gamecube? Probably not!

A darker image could also mean not enough power is getting to the cable, you get that a lot with cheap SCART cables.

I don't even own a gamecube but to me the most egregious thing about these cables is that they do their own digital to analog conversion of the audio from the digital port--and it comes out *worse* than the signal from the gamecube's built-in DAC. This wouldn't be a huge issue if you could use the analog multi-out for your audio, but unlike the Nintendo component cables, the bitfunx/kaico/retro-bit cables physically prevent you from using the multi-out at the same time.

Repeating what others have said, if you absolutely *need* component out from your gamecube, the best option aside from the official component cables would be an HDMI converter like the Carby going into an HDMI to component converter. There have been multiple attempts to make third party replacements for the nintendo component cables but they all have ended up lower quality, so it might just not be feasible.

Man what a mess. Maybe I should just stick with well shielded S-Video cables.

Something I did notice after purchasing these cables was when I went to hook them up to my television, while the RGB-coded connectors matched up fine the audio was swapped and so I had to intertwine them just to connect to the right colored jacks. Makes wonder if the swapped audio channels is because of that discrepancy

I just don't get, why does HD Retrovision NOT make (or start making) a Gamecube component cable? I don't understand why they will ONLY do older consoles (Genesis and SNES), and Wii / Wii U and PS2 / PS3, but the Gamecube is like the "black sheep" to them or something, and they leave the problem up to other companies or even smaller, independent developers or techs to figure out a solution.

They used the 8 year old GCvideo Lite for the Prism when all the higher end solutions are using update able GCvideo DVI with the latest bug fixes. The product was doomed to mediocrity before all the controversy even began. It's not surprising it ended up being a rebranding of the crappy Aliexpress cables.

I had an issue with the retro bit component cables with my Panasonic Q. I got a static/fuzzy image but they worked fine with my black Gamecube. At first I thought it was an issue with my Panasonic Q but found out that wasn't the case. This is because I ended up buying the official component cables and they worked fine with my Q. However the audio sounded fine with the retro bit cables.

GC dol-001 digital port includes 6-bit digital stereo and optical stereo optionals. Mostly, GCVideo products use the 6 bit stereo; only one product, eon gc mk ii makes an optional connector for optical steteo.
Not sure which is better among RCA analoge, 6-bit and optical steteo.

They may as well hide some dead bees inside one end of that cable (the one that plugs into the GameCube) and call it a "high-quality product".

The audio kept cutting out for about 2-3 minutes with my component cable when I start up a game, but then I plugged in a AV cable to my GameCube, insert the audio ports from the AV cable to my 5x Pro & it fixed the audio for me. Also, the visuals of these component cables are not a problem to me IMO.

Yikes I had no idea. Extrems is extremely knowledgeable and will avoid these for a more trustworthy source. Thanks!

I hope they take care of their customers if there are any serious problems that arise

Interesting. I am getting intermittent audio with my set. Sometimes I boot the cube up and I have audio other times I don’t. I may just pull the stock set out and use it for audio. I haven’t played enough to see if they have other issues.

This makes me have second thoughts about getting a carby, or any other retrobit stuff

All I know is, I agree with "always stay retro" when it comes to games!

So with the Prism can you still use the multiout for audio?

I didn't know this. Maybe that's why the cables suddenly dissappeared from Amazon in Europe a few minutes after they launched? GameCube is not so popular that a good cable will came out of stock inmediatly after launching.

So is this issue also with the Retro-Bit Prism hdmi adapter? I would like to know what is my best option for an hdmi solution since my tv doesn’t have the option for component cables.
