Fun fact: it still is unjustified, Wii component cables are perfectly madable by third parties either by component or HDMI adapters that are cheap, and Wii's backwards compatibility is also compatible with GameCube's progressive scan mode, so you can literally do the same in a Wii for way cheaper

Fun fact: the digital av out is literally just a digital port, similar to how hdmi is! The chip exists to convert the signal to analogue for component cables, form what I know.
That means: the Gamecube is the first console to ever have a lossless output option out of the box.

Well, until the company removed the digital av out.

Solution: buy a Wii with a component video cable for it, and play your GameCube games on that

I remember when I was in college in 2007 or 2008 shortly after the wii was released and I went into a gamestop and they had a used official gamecube component cable for 5 dollars. I bought it immediately. That cable was just as hard to come by back then as it is now.

Just before the pandemic, I went to a flea market and saw it just there hanging like nothing, next to some GameCube power cables, I asked of they had "GameCube video cables" and the clerk just grabbed it and I was like "Ah cool, how much" then $15. I just bought it on the spot, no haggle no nothing. Literally speed walked out of there.

Never looked back.

“My thing is rare, which means I can charge an exorbitant price for it!”

Luckily, there is no reason to play on, or own a GameCube these days when the Wii has 100% of all the features of the GameCube and literally has a GC inside and all the connections for it. Just get the first model (!) Wii for $20-30, Wii2HDMI adapter for $10 and a 2GB SD card (optional) for homebrew and a large storage device about 64GB-2TB (also optional) for the back entrance USB for hundreds of downloaded Wii and GC games.

S-video is underrated and should be used more. It's 80% of the way to component. Works on all NTSC Gamecubes as well

Only reason to get one of these nowadays is to use the game boy player in higher res. GameCube games have the wii and regardless the 3rd party cables that exist these days are more than sufficient

stuff like this is why I grew out of video game collecting. it's not even fun anymore with having to pay so much.

I bought one in 2010 and I’ve used it to play GameCube games in digital. I plan on keeping it forever and never selling. I paid about $100 for it.

Welp, time to make an eBay account and sell the cords for mine

Or you could just get a Wii with GC compatibility

I spent a pretty penny for the GameCube component cables, but it is worth it, as I can have higher quality GameCube related content created.

Ebay can ask any price. The one showed, not sold because we see still listed. Should show how much they sold for, not how much listed

There are good quality third party equivalents of these cables you can buy for 60 USD from Retro-Bit. Good quality component cables for the Wii are about 30 USD, and the Wii offers nearly flawless backwards compatibility with Gamecube games, so that's a great option.

You can get cheap poorly shielded component cables for the Wii for around 10-15 USD. The image quality won't be as good, but even those cables are probably still going to get you much better image quality than any component cables can give you.

Modern TVs still aren't great at working with old analogue signals from videogames though, typically with a lot of additional input lag. Retro gaming enthusiasts strongly recommend using purpose-built low-latency adapters to convert the signal to hdmi to reduce latency and potentially also improve image quality.
