The issue that you run into with acoustic-electrics is that they get lots of feedback on stage. Keep that in mind if you're gonna be playing a large show.

What happens is that the frequencies being played by the speakers reverberate in the cavities of the instrument and then get replayed by the speakers cause feedback.

Acoustic electric violins are the best! I love that I can plug them into a loop station for experiments but also just play it casually as a violin

I will say that the unplugged solid body violin definitely has an interesting sound. I can see it being used by itself!

It's exactly like guitars. Electric guitars don't sound like anything unplugged, but electric-acoustic guitars are just normal guitars that you can also plug into an amp.

A few years ago as an experiment, I made one of my custom, handcrafted, classical violins out of spruce and maple, but with a built-in pickup.
I varnished it a bright green (instead of the usual red or golden orange color), and so I call it "The Emerald."
Everyone who's rented it from me so far has said that it sounds just as good hooked up to a sound system as it does without.
It's truly one of a kind and makes for a great talking piece at my shop!

We hear the same kinda thing from guys arguing about tonewood in the guitar sphere. They're worried about how a block of solid lumber sounds unplugged, and never once consider that the magnetic pickups in it don't care one bit about a non-magnetic substance like wood. You play them plugged in or else they don't work right. Like, yeah you can hear them but they sound terrible because the other half of the instrument, the amplifier, is missing.
