It is easiest if you spit it, so instead of 6x18, you do 6x10 + 6x8, that makes 60 + 48 = 108

I had a master’s degree in music, and somehow managed no math since 10th grade. So in my 40’s, I took algebra & a load of science classes at community college. The same time my kids were taking algebra. I tutored kids in math after school at the Salvation Army. I was as proud of those kids’ achievements as I was my own.

As a math major in college, it happens to literally everyone. Even some of the smartest people who can do this and more in their heads will be thrown off in certain scenarios.

I think what she meant is: 20*6=120, 18-20=2, 2*6=12, 120-12=108. Description: round up or down the number to the nearest number end in zero, so this case (20), remember the difference of the numbers(2). Then multiply that to the numerator(6), which get you 120. Then multiply the difference (2) with the numerator (6), and subtract/ add(if you rounded down, the result(12) with the rounded up result(120) and that should get you the right answer.

I *am* the math tutor (in a 5th grade classroom) and I prefer paper and pencil. .... So I can show the process to the kids, of course. 😊
