I used to think theme didn't matter.

I have changed.

Agree with you Lance. Theme has become more important for me as well. I find if it is integrated well with the mechanics it helps me remember mechanics and rules much better. Plus it also adds to the immersion as well.

It would be a fun experiment for a gaming community to create a game devoid of theme, and to have people give it a theme that fits. With computer games, I've seen this done in reverse.

I'll often try any game if friends are pushing for it, but I am also most attracted to a game with a tasty theme... like sci-fi or fantasy. That's always been my favorite. If a game has that, I'll almost always give it a try without too much hesitation.

I personally like games that you can’t change the theme to something else and still have the same mechanics. If you can, then it’s a sign it’s nothing more than an algorithm with a pretty wrapper. I’m proud that my game’s theme is an integral part of the mechanics. Sure, it could be changed to space pirates instead of Caribbean pirates, but it will always be a pirate game. This trend of designing games that can be about zombies or butterfly catching just by changing the graphics is depressing. I played Everdell a few months ago and it was so disappointing in that regards…
