John De Lancie portrayal of Q has been magnificent for 30+ years !!

He finds a mortal who challenges him, defies him, and untethers him from the crossroads to which all the other members of his continuum are bound.

He found in Picard something exceedingly rare for the Q - genuine joy in not knowing how events will unfold, and genuine surprise in actually CARING about another.

OF COURSE he loved Picard. Any Q who found someone like him would be a fool not to. :)
