In this project-based Substance Painter for beginners tutorial, I walk you thru step by step how to texture a model, which I will provide.

First, we begin by looking at Substance Painter's interface and navigation. Then we will take a look at layers, masking, and how they work within Substance Painter.

We look at smart materials and reverse engineer them to see what each effect does. Then we build our own smart materials, add edge wear and dirt generators, stamp custom alphas and finish the project by rendering in I-ray.

At the end of this tutorial, you will understand how to use Substance Painter, even if you are a beginner.

Hey, just wanted to say, I really like that you just dove right into it. I'm liking the first 5 minutes of this video more than the whole hour I spent watching another one from some bougie-looking channel that was trying to sell their tutorial packages from the get-go.

Very good! Now there is the anchor point, so no need to export normal map to reimport and bake everything again to get the influence of bump/normal stamps into the generators.

I had no idea it was as easy as you explained. Thanks bro.

Nice job! I'm using Blender, but this looks like easier than Blender material system. Perfect tutorial! Now I'm texturing my car models easier than I expected! :)

Nice video, a lot of ground covered here. In around 1:07:48 shouldn't you use layer anchors instead of "re-baking" normals?

Very nice! Is there a way to get more precicion to stamp details? Something like on top or right/left views and commands that make perfect align with the axis? or is it always made manually?

Love the video, learnt so much, and feeling confident using Substance painter now! Quick question though.... How do you export the normal maps again at the end of process? You bake out the normal map, then bring it back in again, but when I export at the end, the normal map is missing this data. I can see why, as the normals are now part of the imported mesh, but say I want a new normal with the stamps, plus some other detail (maybe scratches or noise), how do I export all the data into 1 normal map?

My only "solution" so far was to turn the stamps layer back on, and export, but I have a feeling this might not be 100% correct, and I may be doubling up on some things?

Cheers, Dean

This is a solid tutorial to get started with substance painter. Straight to the point, but still very beginner friendly. Thank you for this!

For anyone who can't get the edge wear to affect the normal map make sure you don't delete the hi res mesh in the 'High definition meshes' panel and also click on curvature in the mesh maps list and select generate from normal map.
