If the soil is really hard and u can't get it wet I jam the shovel down twist it a few times to break thru the hard top to try to get to softer ground if it's all hard then ur in for a long dig

I like to pull/drop with force the shovel into the ground and simultaneously push it deeper with my right foot all in one fell swoop. It gets the best of both and is quicker. Also if I need it really deep I jump on it with both feet, kinda like a pogo stick.

that method is only good in the beginning or big holes, but when it comes to narrow and deep holes its useless.
