If someone told you to "take a shovel and go edge that bed, " you would figure out this is the best way to do it within a couple hours. There really isn't a better technique. Great explanation of it here

I do the same thing for beds. Walkways get done with the power edger though. I always save the cuttings to patch bare spots in the lawn. Here in Central Florida there are always bare spots to tend to. Any sod grown at home will grow better than what you get from the garden center as it is from sod farms in South Florida which is a different soil type. I do the same with any stray grass clumps I pull up from beds or between paving cracks.
