7 Most Common Reasons For Hip Pain After Having A Hip Replacement

“I've had a hip replacement last June and I've had so much pain since... the pain is worse now then before I had the procedure. Sometimes when sitting it can feel like the pain works its way around and up to my lower back (on the side I had the replacement). Any ideas how to help with this pain? I'm in the UK. All my consultant has suggested is that he will refer me to the pain team at the hospital... It's like they're not interested at all now.” -GetMoreForYourCar - Bob

More hip pain after having gone through a hip replacement is one of the most frustrating things anyone has to deal with. The surgeon and patient are usually don't know what else to do when this happens. They just blame it on being old most of the time and give up to dealing with the pain. The hope is that at least the hip can move better than before the surgery, but what kind of quality of life does that really amount to if there is still lots of pain.

The reality is there is so much left to do. Most of the time, the root problem that led to hip arthritis has yet to be addressed. That is why there is continued pain.

Flip the situation on its head! If you had a hip replacement, then you don't have to worry about arthritis in the joint! Now you can focus on getting the muscles in balance around the hip so you can get out of pain.

I had a total hip replacement, I went home within a few hours of my surgery. Total life changing.

I'm having a total hip replacement (anterior) in 2 weeks! I'm sorry I watched this video. I have never read so many negative comments and problems anywhere else. I have exercised and lived with horrible pain for 8 years. I am ready to take a long walk. I'm thin and healthy and working hard on all the pre-op exercises. I'm going to think positive and work hard on my recovery. Good luck to all of you with these horrible outcomes.

I had my left -hip replacement surgery 9 days ago, surgery in the morning came home the same day in early evening. Went the first 2 days at home w/o my pain meds. Yikes was not a happy camper. On top of that I'm recovering at home by myself, nearby neighbors help with mail pick-up. Thank God for grocery delivery! Am going to take my time in recovery. Thx for your video.

Thanks so much for this video! I learned a lot.

Im 5 weeks post-surgery (posterior), and i am so happy i got the replacement. Its night and day. I went from very limited motion (Perthes Disease) to a full range of motion. In all directions.

To be frank, the first 2-3 weeks absolutely suck! But it WILL get better. Please don't let negative comments get to you. You deserve a better quality of life.

Great information! I had my left hip replaced just one year ago and right one 5 months ago. I’d say that I have a few of the issues mentioned, a bit of nerve pain down left leg, I think maybe bursitis on right side and tight IT bands which I am working on. But I can honestly say that these are just niggles compared to the arthritic pain I was in beforehand. The arthritis progressed very quickly, over 2 years. The elation of having the 1st one done didn’t last too long as the 2nd one went from bad to worse. I was pretty much disabled. The pain controlled my life. No amount of painkillers touched it. So now I am exercising and active and enjoying life again. The 1st couple of weeks after surgery were the worst for pain. I found sleeping on my back the hardest. And it’s only this last couple of weeks that I’ve been able to walk up stairs properly rather than one leg at a time, so I know that I’m still healing. It can take up to 18 months for all the tissue and muscles to settle back down. I personally could not have gone on without the surgery and I would recommend it to anyone if they need to have it done.

Such a helpful video---thank you! Seeing the anatomy is SO helpful (and interesting)---it makes you realize how complex hip replacement is.

Had hip replacement two weeks ago and was not told any of this by surgeon. I suggest that anyone approaching hip or knee replacement watch these videos. I learned a lot, some too late, by watching these now. Also watched ones about using a walker, a cane, transferring into bed, and useful tools for getting dressed - especially if you don't have help at home.

I've had both hips replaced, and both were same day where I walked up the stairs when I got home same day ( up with the good, down with the bad). The first was 4 years ago. This last one was 4 weeks ago. So far so good, but the recovery has been a little different this time. Thanks for the helpful info!

Since you asked, I'm in the U.S. I've had both hips replaced with anterior minimally-invasive approach. The worst pain I've had with both is in the femur, but it only lasted a few days.

Due to a car wreck in 2011, on my right side I have bolts that go through the S.I. joint. The right hip I've had replaced on the 13th of this month.
What sorts of problems might you see this causing being also that this joint couldn't move because the bolts are holding it steady.
My pelvis had been described as "crushed" hence reconstruction of it in 2011, after the car accident.
The doctor had told my brother that he had had to go through some of the old hardware to perform this replacement.
