Rebuilding a Center Console Fishing Boat - Episode 1: Sea Ox

Welcome to my boat rebuild series on my 1983 20' Sea Ox.
This is my first boat rebuild project. I am rebuilding a center console boat that I'll use for fishing. I purchased the Sea Ox in July of 2020 after putting up a Craigslist ad in search of one. The seller was working on restoring it himself until some health issues, if I recall correctly. I purchased some materials from him, too. That is, enough wood for the stringers, 4 gallons of polyester resin, and enough fiberglass (CSM & 1708) to encapsulate the stringers and the deck. I mostly followed his original plans on the stringers, by slightly changing the angle of them, tabbing them in with 1708 tape (two layers), and covering them with CSM - all with polyester resin. I can't wait to share the rest of this project with y'all!

Thanks for sharing!! I’m looking forward to seeing all the progress from video to video. I recently picked up a ‘74 Wellcraft 15’CC. Mine was all intact but of course I’ve already had to cut out the decking over the bilge because it was soft. All the old foam is water logged and next is to keep cutting the deck to see how far up the soggy stringers go.
Thanks again! I’m already getting some good lessons from ya
🙏

I'm hungry.. lol, just tell it like it is bro. That's real.
I have a 85 260c with 2 I/O BMW 220z's. Motors are good, transom is rotten. A project that led me to your video.

Hell Yeah Brother!!! Glad to see a restoration similar to my Aquasport 200 CC Fkn stringers and all stripped out. Hope it all works out because the end result will be a lifetime out on the water!! Best of luck!!

I have an 87 Sea Ox 200 cc. The hull and transom are still rock solid. It's never been updated and shows its age, but it still runs!

Cool project. New sub. Those “chunky” areas you asked about look like a lot of filler was used. Maybe a previous bottom repair caused by running aground or trailer bunk damage? When in doubt grind it out.

Cool project bro...I did a 17 Sea Ox in 2020...was a tuff one ripping out rotten deck and transome

I'm a new subscriber here and I'm definitely going to be paying attention and following along I'll be working on a project boat this spring myself.

My guess on those chunky areas is that there is some form of bonding putty to fill in gaps between things like stringers or other things mounted to the inside of the hull. You would be surprised what manufacturers will do to cut a corner, especially that long ago. LOL.

CABOSIL is what was under the center stringer its a resin thickening agent for total contact of the stringer

About the question you asked. It is common to find that, this manufacturer would twist fiberglass strand and load it with resin and shove it in... nothing wrong with it.

The question you asked at 10 minutes. It is resin that has pooled up and hardened. The excess resin that didn't get absorbed into the mat.

Fun project but, the best thing about it all is all that farm land to store and work no one or nothing a round you., you have all the room you want great to live in the countryside just need to find some land close by the ocean maybe Albermarle, North Carolina or Chesapeake Virginia

What you did is the hardest thing to do with fiberglass. Pure misery.

That is your drain valley for when you winterize the boat and take the plug out of it that's where watter runs out from rain also the two resin coated areas is where somebody had bilge pumps glued down with resin
