IWM’s new publication explores the historic context in which the iconic ‘Keep Calm’ poster was originally conceived.

As IWM art curator Claire Brenard explains, although the phrase ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ is now ingrained in public consciousness, the posters were never actually seen by the public.

As well as examining the origins of this poster, the publication also looks at the resurgence of the iconic slogan in recent years – its message resonating during the economic crisis. The publication highlights why this poster has stood the test of time, and how ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ has gone on to become the most successful meme in history.

Bex Lewis, author of Keep Calm and Carry On: The Truth Behind the Poster, says, “The design of ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ has penetrated into our everyday lives since its rediscovery in 2001. In this new book, the life, death and resurgence of the design is placed into the context of posters in the wartime period, whilst tapping into why the poster has become such a cultural phenomenon.”

I can remember on the REAL Antiques Road show from the UK a woman had about 50 original 'Keep Calm Carry On' posters in mint condition and the appraiser about fell over. I wish I could find that episode again. I loved watching that show in the 80s with my Grandmother. Miss you Gran

Could we have a post modern historic interpretation that this was issued 'in context' of war propaganda. Is that relevant in peace time when it gained popularity? Cui bono? We need a solid interpretation of this, it's message, why and present interpretation and use. Basic sociology.

In recent times, I've discovered a poster on the Internet. I suspected it was British propaganda during World War II. The reason I say that is, because the slogan is "Don't Help the Enemy! Careless Talk May Give Away Vital Secrets". It's displayed under a Tudor Crown. The slogan has a similar design "style" typeface to Keep Calm and Carry On. The poster I'm referring to should've been mentioned in this video.
