Is there a correct way to wear a wristwatch?...Let's see...

I get that question a lot, especially from clients that are buying their first watch or just getting into watch collecting. They want to know if there is a right and wrong way to wear a luxury wrist watch. That's the reason I made this video.

There are many opinions on how how a watch should be worn and people certainly have their own preferences, but I'm going to give you some opinions and suggestions based on my experience. I hope that this alleviates the itch!

One of the theories being thrown around regarding this topic is that a wristwatch should be worn above the wrist bone. I think that's not really etched in stone!

When I wear a watch above the bone, it feels like I'm wearing a pair of jeans all the way up above the bellybutton, which is not very complementary for any male crotch region! Wearing the watch too high up on the wrist is also uncomfortable for some people, since this might cause the crown to dig into their hand.

I prefer to wear the watch on the bone, meaning right over my actual wrist bone. That's my personal preference. Even though this will typically cause the band to oscillate over and under the bone when you move around (especially for metal watches), it always centers back over the bone (at least for me).

If wearing your wrist watch on the bone is not particularly comfortable for you, you can also try to wear it below the bone, the position a luxury watch naturally gravitates to for people who like to wear it a bit loose or when your arm is raised in a vertical position.

That brings me to my next point of discussion: tight or loose?

I know watch collectors that like to remove extra links from the band, so that the watch fits extra tight. I really don't recommend this, but if it inundates your soul with some weird sense of satisfaction, then so be it!

Furthermore, when you wear a watch too tight, it might fit OK when you wake up in the morning, but by the end of the day (and after you've retained a bit of water), it can definitely make you feel a bit claustrophobic!

So I keep coming back back to preference when it comes to how the watch should sit on the wrist. Preference is definitely the most important thing. Nevertheless, I would like to give you some of my guidelines.

* If your skin is tightening up a bit when you close the watch strap, then the watch might be too tight.

* If you can rotate the watch completely around your wrist over your wrist bone, then the watch might fit too loose.

One thing that I would like to point out about wearing a wristwatch too loose is that doing so causes excessive wear and tear on the links. At the same time, wearing it too tight might stretch out the band. You don't really want any of these two things to happen.

Some people also want to know on what hand to wear a watch. I'm right handed, so I wear it on my left (otherwise, it feels weird). But that's something else that's up to you and on what side you feel comfortable wearing it. The same holds true for wearing two watches at the same time (however, this is something that I only recommend if the two wristwatches you choose to wear are very high end models).

Other than that, it's all based on your taste. How do you like to wear your watch, on the bone, over the bone, loose, tight, right hand, left hand, etc.? Let me know in the comments below. Also, comment on the topics that you would like us to cover on future videos!

So basically what you’re saying is wear a watch however you like it. Good instruction. Bravo

if you wear an expensive watch that's too slack - people will think it's fake...it's like a bad fitted suit..

Two things I like tight: my women and my watches.

For me, this has a lot to do with the shape and size of the back of the watch and the angle of the lugs, and which part of the wrist that the watch best fits against. This varies with the different watches that I own.

You are wearing that watch way too loosely.

I tend to wear my watches fairly loose. Can't do tight. Especially a heavier dive watch, got to have quite a bit of play to avoid feeling claustrophobic of sorts.

Totally agree! There are no hard and fast rules. It's about preference and comfort.

I like to wear the watch slightly below the wrist bone, but not too loose that it drags too far down once you raise your arm. Good points though!

Very informative, friend. But, what’s your take on wearing sunglasses indoors?

I agree with you 100%. A little loose and on the bone - but if it falls either way - it is OK. Great video!

I’m a lefty BUT when I was in the Marine Corps, all males were required to wear their wristwatch on their the left. Same with belts(a traditional regular belt), you always put your belt through the loops started on the left side first. Females from what I was told were suppose to wear their wristwatch on the right.

I wouldn't ever sub to this stuff. But in a pinch, I watched 3 videos for these tips and yours was the best ! Good stuff.

I was a train engineer and job required all matter of things timed as well as constantly moving hands and arms for speed adjustments of the locomotive, I have worn it loose and warn it almost snug, but always defaulted to a tightness that it would stay in one position on the wrist, usually below the bone almost snug, to this day the same

I agree you have to find the happy medium, right in the middle of “too tight” and “too loose.” Most importantly, I agree the “above the bone” makes no sense, because the wrist shrinks and expands during the day, and as soon as your wrist contracts, it will slide down toward your hand. The only way to avoid that is to wear it so tight on your lower forearm that even when that area contracts, it still doesn’t slide down. The only answer, it seems to me, is exactly what you suggest in this video: as tight as you can get it over your bone that still has enough play so that when your wrist expands, it won’t be too tight. Another way of saying this is this: as tight as you can get it such that even when your wrist expands to its biggest during the day, there will still be a very tiny bit of play and circulation is not affected.

It also depends on your wrist style. Some people have a slightly bigger wrist bone, or skinny forearms with no padding on the bones. They can't wear the watch on the bone. They need to wear it above the bone. Also, a loose watch will often tilt and slide and you'll sometimes need to hold the watch with your other hand in order to look at the time. I think that the best way to wear the watch is in the loosest possible way without it sliding on the bone.

You’re exactly right. On the bone.
Not so loose as to be able to rotate all the way around your wrist.
It’s a clock attached to a bracelet. You’d never wear a bracelet that tight.

Right on brother, agree with you on all counts. A little loose because otherwise it gets yuck sweaty. Not good for leather and just uncomfortable on metal.

When i size my watch so that i have a little bit of a mark after wearing it, it still slides onto my hand if i walk around letting my arms hang. How do i go about that ?

Great thoughts. The way a person wears a watch also depends on their career/ work activity. I am a retired Marine pilot. Those in jobs requiring physical/ tactical activity wear their watches tight. A sniper is not going to want a watch banging around on his wrist as he sights in on a target. Just like I don’t want to locate and secure my watch if I am timing something mission critical in the cockpit. Like dropping bombs “on time/ on target.” It needs to be right where I can take my hand off the throttle for a split second, chk it and get my hand back to the power/ HOTAS. Those w/ more relaxed jobs can wear their watch differently. Just thought I’d throw in my 2 cents or secs.

I think it looks the best on the bone, but it will slide around a bit, which is normal, so it's not like it's glued to your skin.
