Now onto the lore!

During the Edo Period in Feudal Japan, These four originally peaceful Yōkai brothers were captured, mistaken for their vicious cousins the Kappa.

It was impossible for Yōkai (supernatural Japanese beings) to return to their spirit realm with anything from the material world. Knowing this, the Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu tricked the innocent brothers, and while they were weakened, ordered for iron collars to be permanently fused to their necks.

The collars would bring along their jugulars if ever removed thus effectively trapping them in the material world forever.

Over time, the four brothers would loose their innocence and would be trained to be the most secretive, yet destructive Ninja clan Japan would ever come to know.

SPOILERS:
I always thought it would be interesting if the creators of 2012 tmnt had been given an adult audience instead of kids, they mentioned in an interview that they had a really hard time keeping the story light enough, and had to re work a lot of scenes and add more comedic breaks. Even then, there are some very, very dark moments in the show that I was not expecting at all. Example: in Avatar, they were not allowed to say "Kill" etc, whereas in 2012, Karai and shredder would yell that they were going to kill someone. The mutations were really graphic at times, especially when Karai tried to stab super shredder in the heart etc. Then there was the fact that they straight up showed splinter getting impaled by shredder, and kicked off a roof. No cut aways to shadows, no implying, etc. the only thing they didn't have was blood. Leo then b e h e a d s the shredder, and carries it back to his brothers as proof of Shredder's death. Like, damn ok.
