Im way outdated on this comment, but great job. My card kept failing and i couldnt get why. The bit where you showed that power need to be connected to the card was the lightbulb moment. In yours it used a molex card but in mine (and a previously defective one) it uses the power connector than is usually found in sata3 hard drives so it was not as obvious. Solved it and is working nicely now

Thank you for the tutorial. It really simplified the whole process. I ended up buying the same card, because its the cheapest on newegg. Great card too, and you can find the latest drivers from startech website.

Good video. You got some interesting comments, some useful, some were not. Especially what you're plugging the card into. The hardware won't let you plug the wrong type of card in, full stop.

I wouldn't get too obsessed with dust, it's usually non-conductive. As for speeds, who knows how fast their USB is working, or even if it is USB 1.0, 2.0, or 3.0. Who cares? how would you find out even if you did? The PC will work out what speed to run at for you, and it then keeps it a closely-guarded secret.

Mine came with Chinese instructions, and I installed the card without a hitch. (I'm fluid in Chinese). The problems came when I plugged some known USB devices into it, when it complained that I was overloading a port. I then noticed the power connector and wondered what to do with it.

Which is how I arrived at this video.

My PC luckily had a spare power plug; if yours doesn't, you can buy PC power cable assemblies to provide extra power plugs.

Now to run it up again with the power plug connected. If I don't post again, you'll know it worked. Happy New Year for 2015!

@GamerDTT you have to have 3.0 ports in the media reader for them to work as 3.0. you also need 3.0 things like external hard drives or something of that sort. it's limited by the slowest part. if you have all the hardware, you might, sound, still need the drivers installed. i'm not sure if the o/s has the 3.0 drivers yet since it's still kinda new and catching on slowly.

There is a way to connect one of the front USB ports to this PCI card with a cable? Would be good to have one USB 3.0 on the front as well.

I installed the 2 port 3.0 PCI black but has no power supply to it and my disk drive is not picking up any disks at all so i can not use the disk drive to install the required drivers so i went to febsmart and downloaded the drivers needed manually there was a inf one and a one that contained a exe file i have ran the exe file and it is saying that the drivers have been installed but the usb 3.0 still doesn't show up in the serial bus controller in device settings anyone have any info that can help?

@rt8269 you need a sata to pin converter. I say it should be cheap enough. or some times it comes with power supply unit

do it increases speed or it just enables us to use a usb 3.0?

It should be noted usb 3.0 protocol has provisions to support up to 5 Gigabits per seconds (Gb/s). notice the gigaBITs (Gb) not gigaBYTEs (GB) there is a huge difference between bits and bytes. There are 8 bits per byte. This would give you about 625 MB/s. It should also be noted the only devices even coming close to saturating a full 3 Gb/s is a solid state drive. It should however give you typically 2-3x the transfer speed as a typical usb 2.0. Otherwise good job on the tut.

The video does not show the other end of the power cord getting plugged in.

the molex conector is to provide power to an extra divice? or is necesary to the PCIe work?
