Surprisingly, this kisses out that his grandfather did not "venture" to North America. He fled Bavaria to flee military conscription. The second time they returned they wanted to settle back I. Bavaria. But he had his citizenship revoked because he avoided compulsory military service. They were deported from the country they were born in.

Besides Alaska, the grandfather also had hotel/brothels in Seattle around the same time period. One of his establishments was at 2nd & Washington. Building is still there.
