This once happened to me in the library. I saw a book and I started to read it at the library. After a couple of hours I decided to go home. By that time I thought that I had already gone to the computer and scanner and borrowed it so I walked out, the alarm didn't go off either. I realized that I never actually borrowed it once I came home so I returned the book to the shelf that I took it from the next day. Nobody realized a thing... :)
