A stunning accident at a Philadelphia cemetery was caught on camera, as pallbearers carrying a casket fell into an open grave after a wooden platform collapsed.

Who dug that grave three times bigger than it should’ve been?
Who dug that grave and set it up and didn’t tell the family that it’s unsafe?
It’s a preventable disaster!

The cemetery is the only one to blame, not the funeral home. The grave is clearly falling in, so the cemetery should have called the funeral home and told them. Then the cemetery should have done a mock setup, and after the committal service, the cemetery staff could have lowered the casket into the vault and completed the closing. Any good cemetery caretaker would have seen this as a problem a mile off. This is complete neglect solely by the cemetery and no one else.

Where was the rigging to lower it in? I have never seen it done this way.

That whole was abnormally large for a casket. It’s also bizarre that there was no vault. If there was a vault the injuries probably could have been much worse. This could have been prevented and it is not the fault of the family unless they demanded a graved side burial rather than having the casket placed by professionals instead of family pal bearers.
The family should be compensated fully!

This whole scenario is extremely weird. I don’t see the mechanism that is usually set up around the open hole, which then lowers the casket down into the grave. It looks like the pallbearers themselves are trying to position the casket over the open hole and lower it down themselves?!?!? 😱 That is NOT how it’s normally done and I have no idea why it would be set up that way? I also don’t see a vault, which is a cement compartment that is set up inside the open grave to give the walls stability and allow the casket to be lowered in easily. In all my professional experience, I’ve never even heard of a cemetery that would allow a burial without a vault!!!

Typically, the funeral home will set up a frame to lower the casket and have it set up graveside and when the family/friends come to pay their respects, the pallbearers place the casket on the frame mechanism that lowers the coffin down into the hole because obviously the hole is 6 foot deep and you can’t lower something that’s several hundred pounds of weight down 6 feet using human beings. This whole thing is bizarre.🤯
