Researchers figure out why ketamine acts as a rapid antidepressant

Researchers have finally managed to understand the molecular mechanism in the brain that causes the surgical aesthetic and recreational drug ketamine to function as a rapid antidepressant. Traditional antidepressants work over weeks, creating new neurons, while rapid antidepressants reactivate existing connections. ThePrint’s Sandhya Ramesh explains how these drugs do this.

So we used to fast a lot... We hardly eat food ... So we survived. Even now we do fasting a lot... We all look 5 to 10 years younger to our age..

Me and my friends would buy Ketamine from the local drug store and heat it to a fine powder. Then snort it for the ultimate dissociative high. That was an escape in the depressing and stressful times of exams during college. Twenty minutes of meditation almost. Yeah that’s how I would define it.

There should be more research done before deciding wether highly addictive drugs such as ketamine, and other hallucinogens are actually beneficial in treatment of mental health disorders . But we should also avoid sweeping statements promoting its use until enough clinical research is done on human subjects so we can decide it’s usefulness . We should avoid promoting such substances till then .
