Flashing OD Light & Hard Shift on automatic Ford. Replace Transmission or install $20 Speed Sensor?

Flashing OD Light & Hard Shift on 1998 Ford Ranger automatic. Don't replace transmission without doing this first! How to replace Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) as cheapest first diagnostic. Replacing speed sensor also worked on 2006 Ford Ranger, 2000 Ford Econoline Van, & 2008 Ford Focus. Jump to fix at 5:05 .
Sometimes a new $20 speed sensor will fix a blinking OD light and "broken transmission". Sometimes it won't.
THIS VIDEO shows changing out the DIFFERENTIAL VSS (non geared, on top of the differential). There is also a TRANSMISSION VSS (geared, side of transmission). Either one can cause these symptoms. I think a Trans-VSS will affect the speedometer and the Diff-VSS doesn't.

We can't find that awesome Ford video but here's the basics on checking automatic transmission fluid level. Okay - JONNY DIY isn't the most conventional and professional mechanic but he understands doing it yourself on the cheap. And you gotta appreciate his laid back style. Totally!

Thank you so much. We have a Ford 2000 econoline van and we are on our second transmission and dealing with same problem. Been a few places and everyone says the same thing about it being transmission. Speed sensor Part was 15 dollars on Amazon or 20 at the local auto store. Was super easy fix and now problem gone. Great job. I believe the diff location sensor is the abs speed sensor. The first one w the gear goes on top at he back of the tranny. It's a speed sensor also, I believe. So, two

03 4.6 v8 Mountaineer here..replaced transmission, transfer case, rear diff and still had the OD light flash... took me 6 years and too much money wasted..when the speed sensor fixed my years old problems.. thanks for this!!!

Thanks, I'm hoping this could fix the same problem that I am experiencing with my 2004 Ford Explorer- but it still might be my transmission selinoid, but since I do have a speed sensor on the back hub, it's very possible this could be the problem- I comment on the results at a later date

I have Ford Mondeo 2002 with automatic transmission, my O/D light started blinking and it has really hard time shifting from 1 to 2, goes to high revs, stays there for few seconds and then shifts very hard. I wonder where this sensor is in this car??

Do you think this speed sensor needs replaced if I have the same flashing OD off light in my 2010 ranger but it shifts great? It came on recently and was shifting bad but had DTC P0420, replaced the cat, and now car shifts great again and fluid is clean and has no smell, no symptoms at all of tranny problems. The doggone OD off light is my only issue
