When I was a kid in the 80’s I removed the chains from the snowblower and installed them on my 1986 XR100r. They worked awesome other than they chipped paint off the swing arm.
Tied them on using fencing wire with fencing pliers.
Growing up on a ranch in the Cariboo British Columbia awesome place to grow up and ride back country

Oooh, if you want to do another bike with chains option (tried and trusted), have a look into the setup the Japan Post Service uses! They run custom Honda Super Cubs all year round, whatever the weather. Proper (non-DIY, non-plastic) chains on in the snow! It’s amazing to see.

It snows plenty in Italy! At least, it used to. Plus, a number of guys do the winter moto rallies in the snow: the trick many use with chains is to chain both front and rear for extra stability. Of course mud underneath will slip with anything.

Me watching this in Brazil: "Yeah, let me see if I need to buy some chains"

Good info, nice ideas. Something I learned in Afghanistan, as a mechanic, is that zip-ties turn in to peanut brittle in freezing temps. I run in to ice and snow here in Oregon quite a bit riding in the winter and early spring. I usually just turn around when that happens. I'm going to build up a set like this, but sew up some nylon straps with metal cam-lock buckles.

I've thought about doing this so many times. I'm glad someone did it!

XTREME MOTO ADVENTURE made chains at home in Delhi and carried them to the Himalayas on his Bajaj Dominator. Your ad-hoc solution seems more practical.

There's a rope-wrap solution, but there may be too much interference.

I tried the circumferential chain wrap on my MTB. I had a DH tire with an open gap down the center to hold the chain in place. I used a couple of used bicycle drive chains and lowered the tire pressure to allow the link to connect and then re-pressurized. Cornering and braking on ice was like being on dry pavement. I didn't bother with the rear, but the VLOG used front and rear.

You can use thick hemp rope instead of chain. It might not grip quite as well as chain, but it's less likely to damage something if it comes loose.

You are both very brave. Exploring the mountains near Geneva, I wanted to go to a little coffeeshop but the road to get there was covered in snow. I have a Ducati Scrambler Classic with OEM tyres so I chickened out!

I've been yearning for chains on my motorcycle so bad. I stud my tires in the winter, but as you point out it's not as good as chains.

Thanks for the video, love seeing the creativity!

I just realized. This is not a motorcycle channel. It is a rider channel.

The only thing that might work is paddle tires, like they use for sand.

Not a bad thing to keep in the kit if there's snow on the forecast

To lengthen zip ties, insert the male end of one tie into the female end of the other.

Great experiment.

I enjoyed watching YOU do this. I'll just tow my TW200 to the trailhead and let the Kenda Mastodon AT I put on the rear do the work.
