These schools are part of the "troubled teen industry." It was big in the 70's and 80's. They are incredibly cruel and abusive. They draw parents with promises to reform their kids while providing education and psychological/therapeutic care and time away from the child to heal on their own. But really they are just paying for their kid to be tormented and traumatized. It's a hellish extended summer camp. To keep the kids in order, they literally break their desire to defend themselves through psychological torture. This can look like yelling/verbal abuse, forced silence, loss of contact/heavily monitored contact with friends and family, isolation, dehumanization, humiliation, shunning, shaming, extremely strict rules, unreasonable punishments, sleep/food deprivation, speech/thought regulation, etc. etc. These compounds are often far away from civilization to make escape as hard as possible. The only thing these schools give kids is learned helplessness. There are still places like this and often get funding through religious charities and churches. Be careful where you donate, there are no words to describe how much damage these places do

I know ppl who fully believe this type of crap. It's disgusting and traumatizing for kids and just makes them feel so bad, as if they did anything wrong. I hope that everyone who has gone through this is ok, and if you need to talk, I'm all ears.

Thats awful. When I was 14 I was SA and ended up with an ectopic pregnancy because of it. I nearly died before I told my mother what had happened because I was scared of what she would say. I can't imagine what that poor girl endured.
