They've been attacking to take Poposna and to extend their pincer thrust from that direction for a month now. They've already dismantled most of the forces they had concentrated for the Izyum pincer thrust, abandoning that for reinforcing the Poposna effort, because in two months it accomplished virtually nothing, save for a bulge to the west which was completely non-strategic when it comes to encircling Ukrainian forces in the Sievierodonetsk area.

Ukrainians held onto Mariupol for an amazingly long time. Now, sadly, the Sievierodonetsk area doesn't have the kind of defensive positions Mariupol has, but if the Russians do close the 30km gap, this would leave them incredibly strung out and vulnurable, as well. I have a feeling that if this were to happen, a long game of whack-a-mole will ensue, because the Russians aren't able to keep the Ukrainian forces from counterattacks to open up corridors of supply for the pocket. Obviously everything should be done to prevent an encirclement, but I doubt the Russians would actually be able to use this tactic terribly effectively. They don't have the kind of forces to effectively keep an encirclement like this, at the very least not without completely compromising the rest of the front (think Kherson)

U have not explained the crucial aspects of that northern orc offensive border…it’s a 60m wide river where they lost 1000+ men in two failed pontoon set ups last month

And that southern offensive from Popasna is on open plains where it is especially easy to kill orcs from hills on the Bhakmut side

The fighting picture is not as bleak for Ukraine as u suggest

Appreciate the objectivity but I say we shouldn’t assume this is going to happen because Russia hasn’t proven itself to be good at envelopments this war and considering they’re barely inching forward here with high losses I find this almost impossible. If this is necessary however I am sure Ukraine will have to make that hard decision to retreat as they know there is a war to win not a battle. Also the HIMARS are coming so no need to really worry about this

Two things...
1.) " they need these right now ".  
Yeah, good luck with that - not happening, certainly not rapidly.
2.) " This will slow cripple, or even stop the Russians from attacking ".  
That might have worked in Iraq, but not against Russian airpower. The numbers of Himars on offer wouldn't change the calculus anyway, and wouldn't live long either.

Ugh, it's heartbreaking this could be what breaks the Ukrainians. I can't help but feel the war has gone on just long enough for American's short attention spans to move onto something else. I hope we (and Europe) don't let them down. As much as it costs to provide expensive weapons, the cost of allowing Russia to win would be so much worse.

A lot of the arms shipped to Ukraine gets lost or displaced and end up on the black market, keep in mind that Ukraine is one of the most corrupt nations in the world, ranking about the same as Niger and Zambia according to Transparency international. What is needed is US advisors or personell that can monitor the whereabout of the weapon systems.
