VERIFY: Is the IRS increasing audits by hiring 87,000 new agents?

The Verify team works to separate fact from fiction. A viral tweet warns middle-class families that the IRS is hiring tens of thousands of new agents to audit their taxes. This stems from funding included in the Inflation Reduction Act that's waiting on President Biden's signature. Ariane Datil verifies if the claim is true.

They're citing @01:22 "FTE 86, 852" from "Table 3: IRS Proposal and Revenue Raised 2022-2031" it literally starts from "FTE 5, 197" in 2022 to 2031. They then proceed to claim that 50, 000 of these will be from turn over of staff yet the projected increase in "Full Time Employees" within the year increases from 5, 197 to 86, 852? an increase of 81, 655 Full Time Employees. So what exactly did Verify Verify?

MENTIRAS! My family has already been affected by the "Tax hounds" A close family member (who is Educated, Responsible, Financially responsible) is currently under investigation and facing a five thousand dollar fine due to an "error" made by filling through TurboTax two years ago! Ask yourself, "if there was any errors made while filling in 2021, and you file taxes accordingly the following two years. Then out of know where in 2023, your fined 5, 00.00 dollars for "discrepancy" made in 2021 but was not brought up for two years until "the hiring of 87, 000 new agents" ask yourself is this some sort of wrong doing made to keep US/THE American people down! This woman and the people she's representing are crooks!

My congressman lamented about putting the 87, 000 to work at the border rounding up illegal immigrants. Sounds like a good place for them.

This explanation doesn't make sense. Smoke and mirrors. How about, after the election, we give all that money to INS and border security! Maybe get 87, 000 agents to enforce our immigration laws.

The IRS already has 80K full-time employees. Now, if they add 87K more, that puts them at 167K full-time employees. There were ~149, 000 tax returns filed per year in recent years.
That works out to one full-time IRS employee for ever 890 returns per year.
There were roughly 1 million filings with annual income over $500K, which works out to six (6) full-time IRS employees per high-income filer.
Seriously? You think they're going to have that many employees focusing on "good customer service" or "auditing only high-income earners"?
They're coming for you, fellow citizens.

What I don't understand is if the 50K jobs were just refilling vacant spots of retirees...why are they seeking approval in the inflation reduction act? Haven't those jobs already been approved in prior legislation? What am I missing here?

The “hiring 87, 000 agents' is much closer to the truth than claiming this is to replace those retiring. Consider this budget increase. Read the report. They are increasing from $12B/yr to $20B/yr. No way this is all IT upgrades. Second, the report states the intent is to GROW the IRS by and I quote "no more than around a manageable 10% annually".

And their intent is not to "go after the rich". Their intent is to go after unreported income; income not reported on currently W2s, 1099s, etc. They believe they'll get an additional 15% doing this, or about $600B in 2019 dollars. They believe the info on this unreported income is readily available with the banking institutions, this is why they are pushing for 1099-Ks on anything over $600.

All this money and it will impact the rich very very little because they are making no effort to close the loopholes. "Tax the Rich" is just their bumper sticker.

That's not could hire but wanted to hire based on the FTE, the only true thing about this is not all those agents would be task with auditing, some would be admin staff, others will be janitorial staff and etc.

FTE stands for Full-Time Equivalent basically if you add up all your staff hours including part time and full time and divide it by 2080 that's how many people you have working at your place full time. The IRS wanted to go from 5191 in 2022 to 86852 by 2031 That's 81000 more FTE, that is crazy!

Replacing 50, 000 that will leave. Ok. So they are not getting paid now? Why would they need new money if they are replacing existing agents?
