Highly recommend trail runners for a lightweight alternative to hiking boots. They can be worn an ever day shoes but have extra traction and waterproofing compared to normal running shoe.

My rule is 14 +1 for underwear, especially if there is a possibility of Aunt Flo visiting. Once you hit 14 pairs, you have enough laundry for a load with your other clothes.
But since my recent trips have been where there is laundry access, I don't pack more than 6 and wash with my temporary roommates.
