using white for highlights doesn't really work for dark skin at least not for overall highlights because it makes it look desaturated so its better to use the skin shade you have as the base but make it brighter but not take off too much saturation and dont use white unless its for smaller highlighting details

also for both shadows and highlights you should use two different shades, one create dimension and another to deepen those dimensions and are only used in places where theres more shadows or highlights

Dont use pure white for highlights or a low opavity white, it maked the lighting desaturated while the skin is saturated looks weird
