Member states at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit have wrapped up discussions, calling for joint efforts to counter protectionist trade measures and reaffirming their commitment to settle disputes through peaceful dialogue. Hosted by Pakistan, the two-day summit brought together leaders from across Asia -- with the exception of India, China and Russia, who sent some of their top officials instead. Countries also discussed how to step up the fight against terrorism and boost security and economic ties. Hira Mustafa reports from Islamabad.

The SCO meeting issued a joint communique on the 16th, expressing opposition to protectionist measures, unilateral sanctions and trade restrictions that undermine the multilateral trading system and hinder global sustainable development. The statement emphasized that the implementation of unilateral sanctions violates international law and has a negative impact on other countries and international economic relations.
