38 months dry. Never ever thought I’d prefer sobriety!
Anyone reading this, if you’re thinking about quitting, DO IT! You’ll love it.

Last week I kicked in my parents door to find them unable to move, in their own filth. Because they chose to sit there and die. My mother is displaying these symptoms, stepfather has sepsis and clearly has given up.
Please, PLEASE, PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS TO YOURSELF!!!!
I DON'T KNOW YOU, BUT I LOVE YOU ENOUGH TO NOT WANT THIS FOR ANYONE ELSE!

Thank you for the wonderful video. I'm 61 and quit alcohol 6 months ago because my sinusitis made my red wine taste disgusting. There were other reasons I quit this nightly habit, including lent. It's remarkable that I'm no longer attached to my wine. It's freeing really.

I’m 63 and sober for 22 years and I’m in better shape physically and mentally than I ever been. I can’t tell you to quit alcohol. I can only say that I had a problem with alcohol.

I was a practicing alcoholic from 18-44 & stopped without putting much effort into it 🤷🏼‍♂️I can’t even get a beer down these days…..but the pain booze caused me over the years became unbearable so stopping at some point was inevitable…..the things I DONT miss about it are :no more hangovers or blackouts, not spending most of my $$ on that shit & making a fool of myself in a bar or other public places….if you’re thinking about quitting you’ve sorta started the quitting process …..& remember that you’re not alone in this, the help is out there but you have to be willing & humble enough to ask for it & there’s no shame in it 🖤good luck to whoever needs it

It's hard to lose a parent in spirit to alcohol. My Dad is still alive, but I feel like I lost him years ago. Me and my siblings are a distant 2nd to his drinking 😢

I’ve been sober for a year today. My late mother was a secret drinker and liked whiskey which she drank on her own. She looked after my poor father, who was a stroke victim for many years and didn’t drink too much because he disapproved of it. When he died my mother let rip at the alcohol, but was eventually diagnosed with alcohol related dementia. Sadly we arranged for her to live in a care home where bit by bit her personality drained away leaving only the shell of my beloved mother behind. It was agony to visit her in the care home and look into her blank eyes with recognition and love completely absent. Avoid alcohol everyone and good luck to all following the path away from it.

Isn't the root cause a Thiamine deficiency caused by alcohol consumption? The alcohol is the factor causing the deficiency of B1. Wernickes can happen to anyone who becomes deficient in B1 for a period of time. It could be from a UTI and failure due to ignorance of doctors to recognize the connection. My mother suffered with this when she had a UTI and the doctors/nurses were as ignorant as a box of hammers. But, I didn't know any different at the time either. Now, I do, but hospitals don't take kindly to suggesting they aren't gods on high and completely in charge, especially, if there are no "big pharma" or high tech "hospitally" solutions. The state of our medical industrial complex is very sad.

I’m so so fortunate as I’m an end of the line alcoholic. I met the beer brains in 1979 when I was in treatment after being dead from an OD of booze and barbs

10 yrs sober.. I tell you it sure takes the social life out of a guitar player.. but it's okay because I still have a driver's license I still have a car I have a little money in the bank.. never try to overcome the little things in life that gives you purpose and meaning..

Thanks Kevin, great information, I'd heard of this Syndrome from doctors who just blurted out the name, but they never explained it, and I didn't research it.

It is great knowledge to have, just purely if I wanted to "scare myself sensible".
I have absolutely zero intention of ever drinking alcohol again, but the more clear reasons as to "why not (to drink)", the better!

I appreciate the research you do,
Onwards and Upwards!

Have son in law in permanent care due Wernicke Korssakov! His short term memory is completely lost ! Every event of every moment of every day is immediately gone forever !! He cannot function in the outside world on his own ! Wernickes was almost unheard of just a few years ago! It is now becoming much more common due to the heavy drinking culture of today ! It is the most dreadful oncost of heavy alcohol use !!

I am fairly new to this but have a medical student background. I am dealing with a new room mate as I have transferred to this town in northern VA. Jeremiah is 47 years old and drinks a minimum of a half gallon of vodka per day, he is also in a methadone clinic program. He combines these and the clinic has no idea of the vodka consumption. When he gets to the clinic at 9 am each morning he has already consumed 14 oz of the vodka (which is obvious and apparent)and they still medicate him. He has a BAC of .16 at 9-10 am every day. Your video explains exactly what I can clearly see happening to memory retention, major confabulation, no time perception what so ever, sits around the house 10-14 hours a day starring at old western movies with a psychosis like paralysis stare on his face. He has also been misdiagnosed fairly recently with GBS which is a mistake on the doctors part due to misleading information provided by was a IV drug user of low quality street drugs for 22+ years. His major physical issues are his legs and feet which doctors are saying is GBS, but they are mistaken and mislead as the "cut" in these street drugs settles in the feet and legs in the form of artery and vein plaque. What Jeremiah has is Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome for at least the past 5 years and is not being treated. Thank you for the video and learning experience.
