I have a day 1 preorder and can confirm it is 5 blocked holes. It was probably an aesthetic thing at first then they realized they get better cooling or save money on materials or some sort of reason like that

Is that like a bad thing? I have a xbox with five holes. Actually has the one with 3 holes a lower temperature while gaming? Can you test that out one time pls?

I had one put together in Sep 2020. Launch edition I guess. I was like “why are these holes covered up at all???”

I have a launch series x. Probably did that for console production cost, that or the heatsink can breathe a little better. Who knows? I know they change things over the years to keep the production costs down. Like the new PS5 heatsink is way smaller than launch PS5 heatsink. To me that looks like less plastic on the inside, which reduces costs, on sales of series x in the long run if you get what I'm saying.
