Figuring out how to get and pay for the "license" was the test. Govt websites make everything difficult for people trying to be legit. Thankful for the Rocky Talkie website giving step-by-step instructions.

Depending on your usecase and needs, MURS radios are a great alternative to consider. I have both and for my use (communication with non-ham spouse during hiking / camping), we strongly prefer MURS to GMRS.

They make FRS walkie talkies that have a bunch of channels pre programmed, along with privacy channels that dont need a license

How far can you talk to another person with one? Or how far can it receive from? The only radios I've used was in the Army. I know nothing about this stuff, but got one because it seemed interesting. But I have no idea what I can do with it 😆. I got two of them
