Installing our 8020 aluminum roof rack on our Promaster 2500. We wanted something lightweight, strong, and able to add on things to it later. It was really important that we were able to add the following to it:

- Unaka Promaster Roof Rack Brackets
- Unaka 8020 Roof Rack
- Unaka Wind faring
- Redwood roof top platform
- Tie downs for outdoor equipment
- Tons of other things that can attach to the bolt system and channels! :)

Here is link to Unaka products. We were very happy with their support responses and they helped me put together roof rack for my configuration specs. Something like 25 emails back and forth, they sent me renderings, and they even screenshot what I needed to add to my cart to complete.

We ended up buying the Unaka Promaster 8020 Roof Rack system. Really great company and customer support. And they have those great Promaster Roof Rack Brackets at a great price if thats all you want for other uses.

One of their techs helped us come up with the measurements and rack based on the dimensions of our solar panels and platform. And then just put it into a cart for us.

Wow! It's simple because it's straightforward BUT harder to execute because you need to plan to place T nuts into the channels BEFORE you tighten some brackets in place and block the channel. So we ended up adding and removing sections several times to make sure we had enough. Whew!

While its not cheap - i did try a DIY with steel unistrut channels but took too long and was too heavy for me on the roof along with our platform.

In the end we loved the product and highly recommend :)

Best to put side rails together first before attaching to roof in one piece. Also you can add the bolts and t-nuts to the straight bracket (just catch the threads) and slide it into the rail from an end —- just line it up to the middle of the splice and tighten. No chasing t-nuts.

So much to learn about…very impressive. I agree; deck boards next to each other more functional. If sealed well, I wouldn’t think you’d have drainage or wood rot issues.

Vince, 80/20 has some roll in nuts that you can add to the channel at any time. They are expensive (what isn't with 80/20) but allows you to add.

Would it not be easier to put it together off the van and then lift it up and install to the roof?

Looks awesome! What is the total length of your rails?

excellent episode and of great interest because I am considering the same rack versus a custom build. After the fact and considering the premium $$s for the Unaka would you still pick it?
