How joining the Olympic programme helped a niche pursuit go mainstream. Since making its debut in Tokyo, climbing has attracted corporate sponsors and professional investors looking to profit from the sport's rapid ascent. The effects are being felt at both the elite and grassroots level.

We apologise for Ryan Jones incorrectly being named Ryan Reyes at 00:00:33:13. YouTube policy will not allow us to replace the video with a corrected version without losing all of the very valued comments which viewers have taken time to contribute. We apologise for the error and have corrected it where it is published on other platforms.

They put Toby the Olympic Champion in at 5:23 just as if he was a random climber, luckily they gave him 3 sec afterwards 🤣

Accessible, no ego like most sports, challenging and not based around talent and natural ability only. We have a climbing wall at school and kids love it.

What a coincidence … I’m thinking about visiting a bouldering/climbing gym this weekend to see if I can try it 😊

I think this video is more of a passion display rather than an analysis, which I expected when I clicked..

Free Solo is what got me interested in climbing. My first time in a climbing gym sold me. So colourful and a positive environment. My first climb got me hooked. I was so bad but up for the challenge to improve. The feeling of my body on the wall was compelling. I realised I wasn't as strong as I thought and my lifestyle needed to change. It has changed thanks to climbing.

I have been climbing since the early 90s. It goes through cycles. In my city Naarm/ Melbourne the number of gyms goes up and down at a slight lag behind the popularity level. Being a glass half empty guy, I would advise anyone thinking of opening a new gym to be prepared for the next contraction phase to start pretty soon or to be able to differentiate your gym from the others. My regular gym caters mostly to long term climbers, who also climb outdoors and so are in it for life.

I'm curious when we'll see climbing walls in schools. Something I would have loved when I was younger but only had a chance on a few rare occasions. It should be as accessible to kids as swimming in my opinion.

Pewdiepie made a video on climbing as well. I saw it after I had begun climbing by chance. Went to a climbing gym for fun with the wife and now we're both hooked. Its great fun, and as Pew said in his video, its kinda like a video game. Its a sport thats accessible to everyone, where you always feel like you could do better and there are levels.

My personal concern is that some local chains have spread themselves too thinly. I don't know the whole story behind it, but Arch are closing two locations (Acton and Burnt Oak) at the end of this month. Personally, I'd rather see one new climbing wall in London that was capable of hosting IFSC competitions than 10 new bouldering walls, but I know that the site selection and economics for that would be unfavourable.
Also, climbing still doesn't have quite as much £££ as other sports, and the national governing body (GB Climbing) hasn't been as adept at forming commercial partnerships as many pro climbers [which in turn means fewer funding opportunities for competition climbers at the grass roots level who aren't such big names], but as a regular climber you have a closer relationship to the brand reps / ambassadors / distributors than you do in a lot of other sports.

Now make tree climbing popular it is just as much fun and comes in a huge variety of forms from different tree species!

I tried bouldering, it's not for me, but bouldering is a fun sport to watch!

You make it sound like climbing is a recent development. I do remember way back in 2000 climbing being part of the opening sequence of Mission Impossible 2 directed by John Woo. Tom Cruise being at the edge of a cliff, doing his thing, somewhere in Australia. And guess what, Tom Cruise was there for the closing ceremony in Paris 2024 Olympics
