before 1991 India's main trade partner was Soviet Russia and Soviet Russia collapsed India had to take a loan from IMF . IMF had laid the condition that India has to open up the economy, so India's greatest economic move was more of a coinvidence than a planned move for which many give credit to Narsimha Rao .

As an Englishmen I find your comment about Indian people not having a 'business mentality' odd. A lot of Indian and Bangladeshi people that moved to the UK back in the 50's and 60's run their own businesses such as Pharmacies, Accountants, Grocery stores and 'Indian Restaurants' (those restaurants alone are worth £2b to the economy) and IMO are very industrious.

Something I like about left-wing governments in South Asia, at least for Sri Lanka and India is that they are changing mentality and opening the market. In Sri Lanka thank god we had that since the independence and communists insurgence in the south was repressed both by SLFP and by UNP under Sirimavo Bandaranaike and Premadasa. You can apply socialism and welfare policies if and only if you have high economic growth. Scandinavian countries cannot be labeled socialists. They are more open than the USA economically speaking and have high growth that is why they are having the best welfare system. India did wrong from the start

Even Nehru, in one of his interviews, said that the adaptation of socialism in India was not a good decision. This was rather late though. Intent behind the socialism or communism is very noble; however, it ignores human defects and assumes humans to be ideal beings. The failure of bureaucratic system and public institutions was due to corruption. I believe, the fundamental assumption before forming any system should be that the humans are corrupt and need constant surveillance (with freedom to take decisions with best of their abilities).

South Korea was a lot more socialist than India ever was. South Korea had 5 year plans and a mixed economy. One of the reasons its so rich today was because of heavy state intervention in the economy.

Modi government is also fundamentally socialist. Modi gives free mobiles and waive loans for farmers in Rajasthan and Gujarat. All Indian political party are fundamentally socialist towards their preferred communities. that also makes them communist.

Honestly speaking we badly need capitalism now in india.This is what happened to our country after following socialism for more than 50 years.If it had followed these reforms earlier India would have been long ahead of China.But seeing Indias recent boom in infrastructure projects and FDI inflows we have some good hope for the future
