Yep! I sit and practice without an amp a lot. I think it really helps you learn to play things cleanly so when you do plug in, you’ve got the clarity down.

Practicing unplugged is fine for technique but you really need to plug in to develop your feel. The way your guitar responds to your playing is much more evident through the amp.

It even gets to a point where your clean setting (clearly you’re unplugged) sounds better than your distorted setting. Then you get amped like “damn if I sound this good clean, the legato should be even easier with distortion.” Then it doesn’t.

I always practiced on acoustic instruments. I've gifted a few electric ones and amps. And I've corrected many students on blaming their instruments. Beautiful playing!

This is why we practice without effects. I'm nowhere near this good but I'll get there some day.
Practicing without an amp makes playing through an amp sound so much better because you catch every little mistake you make.
