How did Vito know about the traitor? Vito is known for his wisdom, experience, and ability to read people. Throughout The Godfather, we see Vito move through the risky world of organized crime, knowing exactly who to trust and who to be careful around. Vito’s ability to detect betrayal comes from years of experience. Clemenza and Tessio had been loyal to Vito for many years but Vito’s semi-retirement and Michael’s rise to power created an environment ripe for betrayal. He knew that both Clemenza and Tessio were ambitious and had their own interests to protect. And later in the film, it is revealed that Tessio is the traitor. Vito's strategic mind and deep understanding of human nature were his greatest assets in protecting his family. What other qualities do you think made Vito an effective leader?

Vito was an effective leader because he built relationships with people. So when you build relationships people open up. The meeting prior to this clip. Tessio and Clemensa were openly gripping about Barzinni. Having built such a lifelong relationship with Clemensa and Tessio, Vito could definitely sense that change in them. Vito told them if you trust me, then be a friend to Michael.
We can see that at Vito’s death he was playing with his grandchild. Whereas when Michael dies he’s all alone.
