“Sliced bread put back on sale; Housewives’ thumbs safe again”

That’s a great headline

"This is the worst thing since sliced bread" -the US Government

There was also the problem of many households not having bread knives any longer.

As someone who did kitchen equipment repair for awhile the cost in metal to have sliced bread is insignificant, those blades last for years, we had a lot of customers with bread slicers and I think I changed maybe 1 set a year (in total not per customer) which is about as much steel as a single band saw blade. The wax paper thing was probably the bigger issue, but I don't know.

Do you think you can cover Government Cheese? When I was a kid, my family was on welfare and the program sent every household a box with food. Powdered milk, crackers...and a brown box of foil wrapped yellow cheese. It melted beautifully. I was only 3 and we rcvd it over a year. It was in the year 80's. My wife remembers it from her childhood too.

I live in Poland (a small town) and sliced bread is available, but unsliced loaves are still pretty common and normal. I prefer it, doesn't go stale as quickly.

What's funny is the US didn't really need to do most of the rationing it did during WW2. It was mostly to just absolutely 100% ENSURE the military effort got every last little thing it could possibly need but also to prepare the public for rationing in general in case the war dragged on or went really badly.

"Bread slicers and wax paper are in short supply and are necessary for the war!

Orrr, just give us some money instead"

Well, in their defense Wonderbread is soft, squishy, and really hard to slice. I prefer crusty, homemade loaves that slice up easily.

The fools nearly robbed us of one of our most popular tropes. "It's the best thing since sliced bread."

Just consider this. In the years 1964-68, my high school years, our social studies teachers harangued us about how we were at war (Viet Nam) and how we were NOT being subjected to the rationing they endured during WWII. We wore stockings, not Bobby socks. We had sugar and could buy whatever food we wanted. Our dad's went to work without being limited on gas purchases and tires. We didn't have to put up blackout curtains and shut off any lights that peeked through. My uncle was a warden and he was glad he didn't have to drive around ensuring lights were not seen, even though his gas ration was an A sticker.

I loved the bread slicer at Lidl when I lived in Europe, I wish all grocery stores had one for the artisanal loaves ❤ I always mangle them when I have to slice at home!

Dude, I love your channel for historical stories just like this. Food isn't just food, it's history too.

So basically they expected a bunch of steel bread slicing machines to just sit idle for the duration of the war, for no particular reason. Not like all of that steel was going to magically vanish out of the bakeries and reappear in the steel mills.

Banning the manufacture of the machines might have made sense, but by the point that the bread was already being sliced, it was too late for the law to accomplish anything...
