The perfect viking's weapon, an axe that also can thrust and a spear that can also cut 😂

Can we get a whole video on weapons? We know existed, but no one knows what looked like. That sounds ridiculously fun.

The article "A quest for the Atgeir" argues quite effectively, I think, that it is a subcategory of spears, Petersen G and D2, distinguished by their blade and socket construction.

There's a Siberian weapon, particularly used by the Yakut people, which is called 'Palma', in Russian. In their language there are 'Batas' (Short Palma) and Batuya' (Long Palma).

It is essentially a large blade inserted into an either axe-length or spear-length handle, being used to cut and thrust. It also can have the unique blade geometry of Yakut knives. Since the end of the war periods over there, they still retained as a hunter weapon. They also have an unique sword called 'Kylys', which I could find small bits about.

Most of the information about those weapons, is in Russian. The Yakut have 'Ayyy', which is a traditional spear design really. 'Batas' may not be an axe, but thought it'd be neat fact to bring up as a possible suggestion.

Ian of Forgotten Weapons and his friends have already proven that the Atgeir was an early firearm.

Most likely we do have surviving examples, its just not obvious to us that they aren't just large spears! The prime suspect is a kind of extra large spearhead with cutting edges on the sides, sort of like a glave. These are depicted and have been found!

As a teenager reading about the atgeir I always assumed it was just a long bladed spear with a good cutting edge

I think that it is a bill, in part because bills were found in Frankish graves earlier, so a possible continuation.

I believe skallagrim has a theory it may be the cutting spear.

The reason why none of these exist is because they were only made on the Greenland settlements and they had their peculiar shape because they were made from a farm tool due to there being not enough surface level iron to create actual swords

I had no idea about this, and I pride myself on knowing a lot about Vikings

Recent research has been indicating that the Atgier may have been a primitive firearm. Ian over on Forgotten Weapons did a video on it and was involved in some of the research, if memory serves.

Atgeirr, so Axe Spear... Because Geirr is Spear in Norse.
If I had to add my 2 cents to the discussion, It's a offset spear, like a Bardiche with the wooden shaft with a flat axe head that extended to where a spear tip would've been. So kind of like a mix between a spear and a Lochaber axe.

Song in the background is Aria con Variazioni arranged as a cornet solo. Most high school trumpet players play this for solo competition
