You know, it's funny, open any 101 economics course book on pages that discuss the formal theory of free markets, and you'll be told that corporate profits are actually symptomatic of a market's failure, not indicative of its success.
That is according to the theory of why free markets should be a good thing, not some marxist criticism of free markets.
Yet, somehow, the political "defenders of the free markets" can always be seen defending exactly those things the theory insist have the opposite effect.
The same goes for defending corporations that really have monopoly positions, defending corporations' rights to secrecy, etc...

But we need more research, decades of research isn't enough to be conclusive, we need to conduct an experiment over time where we feed babies formula and breast milk, then measure them throughout their entire lifetime to see who ends up healthier.

I'm being sarcastic, but that's actually what they would say to save their businesses; it's basically what the tobacco industry wanted the government to do before they said "fuck you." and finally came out hard on tobacco.
