Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Lost Bits! Hey guys, welcome to LOST BITS! Where I will cover unused and unseen things in various games! In this video we FINALLY explore Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and have a look at various unused graphics, animations and even some unused zones! In this part one I cover the Sonic 2 prototype and in the next one, we'll check out the final release! Sonic the Hedgehog is a classic and is known to have A LOT of cut content! Concept art of an early map shows what the unused Simon Wai stage IDs would've belonged to:
Zone ID 01 - Ocean Wind
Zone ID 03 - Sand Shower
Zone ID 06 - Blue Lake (later overwritten with Wing Fortress)
Zone ID 09 - Rock World

Those empty level slots could be used in conjunction with debug mode to make your own Sonic levels much like Super Mario Maker!

as someone who's used sonicretro since i was like 11, i came to this video expecting the absolute best. sonic 2's beta development was documented super heavily on retro. i absolutely love how you went into intricate detail on the betas. you really didn't skip out at all! i'm impressed. it's like the beta pages put into a video! surprised you didn't mention how in the earlier betas when tails took damage it took out your rings.

I remember when a bunch of us threw in to buy the Nick Arcade cart. Best $300 I ever spent lol. We didn’t even know it was going to be that early of a build. We were expecting a build newer than the Wai build

Btw I was the one who found the Super Sonic palette in the Wai build. Hard to believe it’s been almost 20 years since I found it.

You can still get Tails's name listed as Miles on everything in the game. On the title screen press up 3x, down 3x, then up once. You'll hear a ding, and in everything from the options menu, to his lives counter and the end of stage messages, he'll be listed as Miles. Just a little treat for everyone. This works in all versions btw, Genesis/mega drive cartridge and remake.

Appearently the "faster" running sprite in the prototypes has been combined with Sonic CD's Super Peel-Out sprite to produce the max speed running sprite for Sonic in Mania.

9:55 more animation frames would have had no effect on performance of games at that era. The benefit to reduced animation frames is storage. Also having one set of animation at a high frame-rate compared to other animations is a little weird so it could have been a choice to make all Sonic's actions more consistent - but cartridge storage is the main thing it would have changed.

3:45 I don't think anyone will read this but.. I bought that game for my Genesis when I was young (in 2008 or 2009?? I guess.. I was 6-7 years old when I had my Sega Genesis) and I was really confused because I saw videos on youtube with Tails in the playable zones, special stages... the one I had didn't even have the Multiplayer mode!! :(
When I told this to my dad back then (he knows about these kind of things tho) he told me that it was maybe a demo! not a full game, and I was fine with it.. the only problem was... wich demo it was? becuase there was nothing like the mine and it was... weird... so well.. I forgot about it until now that I am a teen XD I'm happy to know I played that game but without knowing I literally touched history<3
