Do References Mean I Got the Job?

While being asked for references toward the interview process is a good sign, it does not mean that you are guaranteed a job offer.

Today I discuss further what sometimes can happen at the reference stage to result in you not getting that job.

References are dumb, they want to know who you are NOW based on who you worked with in the PAST

Only give references after you have a job offer, end of story.
That means that everything is in writing and contingent on your references.
Why bother your references if they aren’t serious?

They said they’d call my references “tomorrow”, that was 3 days ago and my references said they got nothing. -_-

Knowing the references I have (I have at least 15 fantastic references that are very familiar with my work, my character, my qualities). I update it all the time and always ask first and update them along the way that they may be receiving a contact from a prospective employer in those cases. After some of the things I heard about the references I received, there is no way my references were the reason I didn't get a particular job. I was a bit frustrated to go through 4 interview rounds and not get a job. I was lucky to recently get 4 offers out of 12 recent interview situations I had, but there were 2 that I did not get where I know they checked my references. I know it wasn't that, so I wonder what it was. Most of the time it is because an internal candidate popped up. Almost always with all things being equal or in Higher Ed they always go with the internal candidate, like it or not. I DON'T like it but that's life.

As soon as they ask for refrences, I am like BYEEEE, I am not botherig with stuff like this, its super annoying. To be honest last 3 jobs I had in the span of 5 years I dont have a single number that I can give to someone.
