I understand the importance of having a reference but what good comes from them helping you land a better job.

I'm actually at this phase. I just interviewed and the interviewer seemed concerned about my technical skills and asked me to provide references to speak on my technical skills. I really don't know who to ask.

Why you need confirmation from previous bosses when you liked the candidate? This makes no sense. If he wowed you in the interview, hire him. I am sorry but this is it.

As someone who has been on my own financially since 19, I've never taken any aspect of the job/career hunting process for granted. I view the reference verification stage as crucial to getting to the finish line for a job offer.

I always call 🤙🏻 my references beforehand and thank them and tell them what position I'm applying to etc.. Solid advice, Anish. Thanks 👍🏻

this is exactly why i only give my number to a trusted buddy or family to give a reference that i want. i can't be bothered to run after a former boss who is gonna be stuck to the truth.

It means the company is OUTDATED. Weird HR asked me for references and I gave them, then they asked for references from a specific employer. An employer I left as they were toxic.

Thank you. This is really helpful and encouraging. I appreciate the specificity in demystifying the topic.

What if the reference person is a piece of shit? Or corrupt.. I am dealing with one that was manipulative and try to steal from me, and one that was corrupt and don't want to get out out for it. So the first one gave a shit reference and the second one would be able to prove that the first reference was shit but guess what they refused to offers it because they are hiding the fact that even if I did a good job they didn't get me for the full time job I applied out of religious discrimination.. so that's reference to you in some cases. The most unfair shit ever.

"You can have my references once a job offer is on the table and not a moment before that". Obviously stated more diplomatically

The whole.reference checking.process is utter nonsense according to me. It is almost interviewing the reference more than the candidate. Someone can easily make good references by beg and request but the real skill in the interview is to really determine the candidate's personality and not really need the concept of reference checks.

When they’re looking for references, they are really looking to find out how compliable you are as an employee, how much you’re willing to bend for being liked. Because, having good references doesn’t always mean high-achiever. In fact, it can be opposite and the reason why someone left. I know too many examples, where lazy workers are managers favorites, just because they are willing to lick asses so that once they leave, their ex-boss gives them good reviews. And that might be the only real skill they come with.

I had 2 rounds of panel interviews and then was asked by HR for 3 character references which I provided 6. They immediately came back and asked for a supervisor contact information for my last two job….a week later none of my references have been contacted? What does this mean? Yes I plan to follow up with the employer since the final interview went extremely well🤷‍♀️

Nobody is asking a reference to see if the person offering one is moral or not.

What if you have already singed a contract offer and THEN they check references?

Hi Anish. I've been unemployed for 5 1/2 months now. I've had second, and even third interviews only to be told that the company hired from within. I also have excellent references and a solid administrative background. I was recently turned down for a position that was paying less than what I was earning, but the company and experience would be an asset on my resume. After checking references (yes, I gave all my references a phone call) I was informed that the other applicant was chosen. Can you give me any reason why they did not choose me?

Can references be coworkers and friends or does it have to be management? What if I’m leaving because of toxic management? How could I ever get a reference from them if they don’t like me?
