Glad you got to try Sri Lankan food! So the dark/black kind of thing you tried was eggplant/brinjal which is fried and pickled sort of. Then the Seeni Sambol is mostly like a caramelized onion dish (Seeni means sugar in Sinhalese). Hope you get to try more Sri Lankan food in the future.
