Rib anatomy
Показать описание
The ribs are curved, flat bones that form most of the thoracic cage. Typically, individuals have 12 pairs of ribs. They can be classified in several ways.
Based on their articulation with the sternum, ribs fall into three types:
🔸 True ribs - ribs 1 to 7; attach directly to the sternum via their own costal cartilages;
🔸 False ribs - ribs 8 to 10; connected to the sternum indirectly via the cartilage of the rib above them;
🔸 Floating (free) ribs - ribs 11 and 12; they do not articulate with other ribs, adjacent costal cartilages, or the sternum.
Furthermore, ribs can be classified as either typical or atypical based on their anatomical features:
🔸 The ribs 3 - 9 share similar characteristics and are considered typical ribs.
🔸 The ribs 1, 2, 11 and 12 are considered atypical ribs.
🔸 The tenth ribs can be either typical or atypical, depending on their articulations with the bodies of the ninth and tenth thoracic vertebrae.
