I've done about a dozen trans swaps in the last 60 years and I have learned a few tricks that make it easier. The first step is to buy a totalled car with the trans that you want that has been rear ended. Then you have a donor and something to refer to as you work. It's still a huge job but entirely doable.

If we listened to every thing scotty said about cars there would be no car community🤣

Love how when you mention a bad car you always throw up a Mercedes 😂

Diskliked for Scotty telling me that I shouldn't manual swap my rusted 96 taurus.

Agree 100% on the Manual Trans swap on later model cars, but on older models like a Toyota Pickup or 240-280Z it was fairly easy with no computers to deal with.

I swapped my slipping auto AE86 to manual in a day. Most cars with the option for manual already have holes in place for the clutch master cylinder plugged with a rubber grommet. All that was needed was the transmission itself, driveshaft, trans mount, master cylinder, pedal, slave, some brake line, and a clutch kit.
Total cost was just under $200 for everything second hand, everything bolted in place and was the same amount of work as changing a clutch in a stock manual transmission car, with the only addition of removing the auto trans cooler and bolting the clutch master/pedal in place, then running/flaring the line from the master to slave.
Secondly the ECU doesn't have to be changed on alot of cars as the transmission shift module in most is a separate entity while the ECU's focus is the engine.
My AE86 is carburated, so doesn't even have an ECU, but my once automatic EFI 240sx still has its auto ECU with its new 5 speed with the only side effect being it's lack of speed limiter and a lower rev limit from the stock auto tune.

So in short TL:DR: I actually recommend swapping your auto trans to a manual transmission, as the work load/skill is the same as changing a bad clutch as maintenance in an already manual car, and the potential benefit of having a "less likely to be abused automatic sports car" into a more enjoyable manual one with a third pedal to kick for easier burnouts and drifting.

Just did a manual conversion on my 98 civic. It was super easy, everything was plug and play.

I swapped a 6MT into my 03 Honda Odyssey with the help of my granddad. It was a fair bit of work but honestly it was worth it.

I did the auto to manual swap myself in my 2000 civic.
Let's mention I am a 21 year old diesel mechanic(I completed the swap when I was 20). Yes it's much easier to just buy a manual car but I'm big on work with what you own. Been swapped for nearly 6 months now I believe

I changed an automatic to manual Scotty when I was 15 years old. It was on my first car a 81 Rx-7 too. Did it over at my buddies house. We did real well and there were multiple issues along the way, like the first transmission was a dud. Once everything was installed we had a problem getting the starter to work because they were wired differently. The solution came to me in my sleep and it was all good ever after. I would definitely do it again on a older model car like that. I also just took out my Toyota E-locker and replaced that with a limited slip. Keep the e-locker housing and all!

It's worth it on a Supra, 240sx, 300zx, 3000gt, and rx7.

If you know what you're doing and have a great group of knowledgeable friends around you its not very difficult. Its also alot of fun if you enjoy that kind of work. It all depends on you.

I read something about this! that this guy has an automatic 1994 chevy cavalier z24, he said he hated himself and the car so much swapping in the NVG 550 manual from the Th-125 automatic it took him almost 3 weeks and he was relieved that it was so successful, he is now happy and having the fun of his life with it... I am looking into doing the same with my 1993 chevrolet cavalier Z24 the automatic is iffy at times I like the reliability of the manual and fun, i found a pontiac Fiero specialist that is willing to do it for me THANK GOD! I'm on a roll now, all those parts though holy mackerel!!!

Hey Scotty, your assessment of FJ owners is spot on. My father loves his, has owned 2, and wouldn’t trade it for anything else. Definitely a well-loved model.
